Day one – Wednesday 29th August, 2018

Our tour begins with a mid-morning flight Dublin to Schiphol Airport in Holland. On arrival, we will be met by our coach and driven a short distance to our first garden. Vlinderhof is nestled in Maxima Park in Utrecht, and the garden plan is by acclaimed designer Piet Oudolf. Residents in the area asked Oudolf to design a garden within the park, to be maintained by volunteers. Now, over 15,000 plants of 97 different varieties in a naturalistic setting. Vlinderhof loosely translates to Butterfly Garden, reflecting the desire for the garden to be a draw for wildlife as well as people. You will have time to take in this natural, unpretentious landscape garden and then we will take our coach to the pretty university city of Groningen which will be our base for the next couple of days. Once we are settled into our hotels, we would love you to join us for our group dinner.

Day two – Thursday 30th August, 2018

We will meet at our coach for 8.30 and then begin our day with a visit to the beautiful garden of Lianne’s Grasses. We will be met by Lianne Pot who is the owner of ‘Lianne’s grasses’. As a designer, Lianne has a passion for grasses and more recently prairie plants. She started the nursery over 15 years ago and now holds the Dutch collection of Poaceae (ornamental grasses). She created the ‘show garden’ in 2000 to show her visitors how truly beautiful and useful grasses are both in borders or grown as standalone show stoppers in containers. Over the last few years she has also developed a love for North American prairie style plant which we will also see growing in her show garden.

Following on from Liannes garden we will travel on to our next garden, Jakobstuin. Owner and designer, Jaap de Vries, calls his garden an “Ode to the Dutch Wave.” This garden is an amalgam of meadow style planting and North American Prairie plants. Jakobstuin does not have hedges or garden rooms instead favouring a looser prairie style of sweeping naturalistic planting forms. Jaap combines plants with a painter’s eye concentrate on form, movement and light and if you are friends with Jaap on facebook than, like me, you will have ogled salaciously over his many photographic posts.

Day Three – Friday 31st August, 2018

Today we will visit Kwekerij De Kleine Plantage, a specialty nursery with a focus on Dutch wave plants. This beautiful garden shows off the best of structural perennials and grasses in hedge lined pockets which extend out from the house. The garden has a rhythm and a flow, using the hedging to compartmentalises space but within these compartments there is room for experimentation. As with all great nurseries everything is clearly labelled and this is a opportunity to find cutting edge perennials.
After lunch we will venture on to our next garden. Andries Bierling & Bob Foltz’s garden. This is a specialised nursery with a wide range of perennials, ornamental grasses, herbs and annuals. They have unique collections salvia and echinacea (both Dutch Plants Collection), agapanthus, geranium, dahlia, hosta, arisaema, epimedium and other special shade plants and botanical rarities. You will also find an eclectic garden shop with pottery, seeds, traditional garden tools and chestnut wood fencing.

Day four – Saturday 1st September, 2018

Arguably the highlight of our tour, today we will visit Piet Oudolf’s private garden at Hummelo. As all good gardeners know, Hummelo has become a place of pilgrimage and a garden that you must visit at least once in your lifetime. Piet Oudolf is undeniably the master of the New Perennials style of naturalistic planting. His garden is his palette and a place to experiment and play, therefore it is in constant change. When we enter this garden, framed by hedges, we will discover a space that explodes with familiar and new plants in an exuberant and thrilling display. Piet emulates and builds on his image of nature and here we’ll get a glimpse into the mind and creative process of this master gardener.

To finish off our perfect day we will pay a visit to the nursery De Hessenhof. Fergus Garret of Great Dixter describes De Hessenhof as one of the best nurseries in Europe. The man who runs it, is Hans Kramer, a tall quiet Dutchman who has developed a reputation for a sharp eye, an unrivaled knowledge of perennial plants and for the quality and variety of the plants he sells. Hans will greet us when we arrive and give us introduction to the nursery. There will also be plenty of time to explore the stock and trial beds and finish off the trip with another spot of shopping. Later in the evening our coach will take us back to the airport for our flight home.
